Editorial Board



Jorge GÓMEZ TAPIAS 
​ is a geologist and doctoral candidate in Geosciences at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He has worked as a cartographer at the Servicio Geológico Colombiano for 17 years, where he has authored approximately 70 geological maps and is the coordinator of the Grupo de Trabajo Mapa Geológico Colombiano, of the Dirección de Geociencias Básicas, which was recognized by Colciencias as a research group in 2017. GÓMEZ is the first author of the Geological Map of Colombia at a scale of 1:1M (editions 2007 and 2015), of the 26 map sheets of the "Atlas Geológico de Colombia" at a scale of 1:500K, and the co–editor of the book "Compilando la geología de Colombia: Una visión a 2015". Since February 2018, he has served as VicePresident for South America of the Commission for the Geological Map of the World (www.ccgm.org)He was co–coordinator and the first author of the Geological Map of South America at a scale of 1:5M. He also holds the position of Delegate of Colombia for the International Union of Geological Sciences (www.iugs.org). Currently, he is carrying out a research project called "Evolución Geológica de la cordillera Central" and is the editor of The Geology of Colombia Book. GÓMEZ is in charge of coordinating all the activities related to the project and the editorial process.


Daniela MATEUS ZABALA is a geologist who graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 2016. MATEUS is in charge of handling correspondence with the authors of The Geology of Colombia Book, the preparation and copy editing of texts and the editorial review of the chapters. She also coordinates advisory work to the project provided by the Observatorio Colombiano de Ciencia y Tecnología.

​Ana Oliva PINILLA PACHÓN is a geologist who graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 2018. She is responsible for the editorial and thematic reviews of the chapters for The Geology of Colombia Book.

Fernando Alirio ALCÁRCEL GUTIÉRREZ is a geologist who graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and has been part of the Grupo de Trabajo Mapa Geológico de Colombia since 2012. He has co–authored several publications within the group, including the "Catálogo Radiométrico de Colombia en ArcGIS y Google Earth", and he is also the first author of the informative "Mapa Geológico de Colombia 2017" at a scale of 1:2M. ALCÁRCEL has extensive experience in vectorization and digitization of graphic material for scientific publications, which is why he is the main graphic artist for The Geology of Colombia Book and in charge of elaboration and improvement of figures and maps. 

Andrés Eduardo JUNCO ROJAS is a geologist who graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 2016. For The Geology of Colombia Book, he works as an editorial assistant, mainly in charge of the standardization and compilation of references of the book using the citation software EndNote.

Alberto NÚÑEZ TELLO is a geologist who graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and a specialist in environmental management and disaster prevention for the Universidad del Tolima. He has worked for 32 and a half years at the Servicio Geológico Colombiano, mainly in regional geological cartography. For The Geology of Colombia Book, NÚÑEZ co–authors the chapter “Rear arc small–scale basaltic volcanism in Colombia,” and he is also in charge of the thematic reviews of chapters.

Alejandra CARDONA MAYORGA is a graphic designer and specialist in photography from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. CARDONA handles all visual aspects for The Geology of Colombia Book and designs and diagrams digital and printed images. In addition, she is in charge of carrying out photographic and video documentation of all the activities related to the project, including taking photographs of the authors and the photographic records of the field trips, as well as editing the visual material.

Lisbeth FOG CORRADINE is a social communicator and journalist from the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, with a Masters in Science Journalism from Boston University, United States, as a Fulbright scholar. In The Geology of Colombia Book, she directs the activities related to social appropriation of knowledge. FOG generates stories in simple language about the contents of the chapters. These stories are then published in Colombian media.

​Miguel Gerardo RAMÍREZ LEAL is a graphic designer from Universidad Nacional de Colombia with 11 years of experience in the field of graphic design. In The Geology of Colombia Book, he is in charge of the layout, production and printing of the book. In addition, he supports the layout of graphic pieces. 

Clara Natalia LEÓN MONTENEGRO is a geologist who graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 2015. In The Geology of Colombia Book, she is responsible for the preparation and adjustment of the figures and supports the activities related to social appropriation of knowledge.



Scientific Committee



Victor A. RAMOS is a CONICET Researcher and Emeritus Professor at the Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina. He has been working for more than 50 years on understanding the tectonic evolution of the Andes. His findings have helped unravel the tectonic processes responsible for the Andean Orogeny, from Tierra del Fuego in the south to the Colombian Andes in the north. Professor RAMOS supports the editorial board through the review of chapters on tectonics and the improvement of the editorial process.  


C​ees W. PASSCHIER is a professor of Tectonophysics and Structural Geology in the Department of Earth Sciences at the Johannes Gutenberg Universität of Mainz, Germany. He is the president of the IUGS Commission on Tectonics and Structural Geology and has been the Chief Editor for the Journal of Structural Geology since 2008. Professor PASSCHIER is responsible for the oversight of structural geology in The Geology of Colombia Book.

David BUCHS is a professor at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, Cardiff University, United Kingdom. Professor BUCHS is working on seamount formation and accretion, as well as the magmatic and tectonic evolution of the Isthmus of Panamá. Currently, Professor BUCHS is a coordinator of the international Erasmus+ program, editor of PLOS ONE and advisor to the Panamá Canal Authority. Professor BUCHS is reviewing geochemistry for The Geology of Colombia Book.

Agustín CARDONA is a professor at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Medellín. He is working on the geological evolution of the Andes and Caribbean, convergent tectonic settings, geochemistry and geochronology. Professor CARDONA is reviewing geochronological and Colombian geology for The Geology of Colombia Book.
